Interests
Bruce believes in the power of good governance. Being mindful of how boards recruit and orient trustees to their roles, and utilize proven tools of good governance can increase the board’s contribution to the success of a school, and enhance each trustee’s satisfaction with the process. Friends school boards have a particular advantage in this regard when they pay careful attention to Spirit-led discernment, and apply Friend’s testimonies and principles in their work. Bruce is also very interested in the benefits of using a broadly inclusive, iterative strategic planning process to engage school communities and challenge them to unite around ambitious shared goals.

Experience
Bruce is Clerk of the Board of Trustees of Westtown School, an 800 student Pre-K to 12th grade Quaker boarding and day school. He has been a member of the board for over 10 years and during that time also led the Long Range Planning subcommittee. Bruce also served on the Board of Managers of Friends Hospital for 10 years in various roles including Assistant Chair, Secretary, and Chair of the Nominating and Development Committees. He currently serves on the board of the Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation. Bruce has participated in governance training workshops led by Friends Board Support and Training Project (now Friends Board Consulting), Tom Holland, and John Carver. By day he maintains a law practice in Philadelphia where he focuses on litigation and dispute resolution.
