On May 3, 10 and 24, 2006 students from Friends School in Detroit, Grosse Pointe Academy and Detroit Waldorf, University Liggett, Crossroads, and The Academy of the Americas gathered together at FSD for a three part “Envisioning a New World Conference.” These 7th and 8th grade independent and public school students considered such questions as:
- Why were positive multicultural steps possible following the Civil War and how do we move today’s world in that direction?
- What would make an equitable educational system?
- How should we construct the health care system?
- What is the proper the role of the military?
- How can we improve the justice system?
- How should we support our less fortunate citizens?
The participating students constructed their own simulated society on the final two days without any adult being allowed to speak.
