The Friends School of Atlanta (FSA) in Decatur, Georgia, has recently received more than $5000 in new grants and donations of garden supplies for the completion of its innovative Outdoor Laboratory. The project has brought together students, parents and members of the community to create a special space that includes a food garden, a peace garden and a peace path. It also provides opportunities for students involved in the project to learn concepts in mathematics, science, the humanities and environmental studies.
Recent grants include awards from The Friends Council on Education, Project Learning Tree (The American Forest Foundation), Slow Food USA, National Garden Association, Youth Service America/State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Awards and the J. Lewis Kirk/Plumstock Farm Trust of the Willistown Friends Meeting. FSA parent Frances Rundlett, and environmental consultant, is Project Director. Local landscape architects Evan Connary and Kathy Montgomery helped design the peace garden.
The peace garden was installed during a ceremony on National Youth Service Day, April 17, 2004. It will offer a truly quiet place for reflection and is open to the Decatur community.
