Job Description:

The assistant teacher is responsible for providing support to the lead teacher in assisting students both academically and socially in a multi-grade classroom consisting of students in grades 3-5. His or her responsibilities may range from working one on one with a student on an academic task, to teaching a class lesson, to guiding students in resolving conflicts. The Teaching Assistant position is ideal for individuals beginning a career in education and/or in a credential or graduate program. The position supports the classroom lead teacher and reports to the lower school administration.  

 Employment Classification: Exempt, 10-month full-time

Reports to: Lower and Middle School Director

Oversight and responsibilities:

  • Support the lead teacher in creating a positive learning environment

  • Help in the correcting of school work and homework

  • Assist in the preparation of classroom materials

  • Assist in the planning of the weekly curriculum

  • Assist in maintaining a classroom environment that supports the learning of students with a wide range of learning challenges

  • Lead group activities and lessons when needed

  • Teach small reading and math groups

  • Teach lessons in a subject area that interests the assistant

  • Maintain ongoing communication with the lead teacher on classroom issues and individual students

  • Model patience, flexibility, kindness, responsibility, a sense of humor, and a respect for others

  • Exhibit appropriate and accurate math, spelling and grammar skills

  • Participate in the formal communication with parents, such as parent conferences and report writing

  • Attend staff meetings and required events as referenced in the Faculty & Staff Handbook

  • Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to the position

  • Other duties as assigned by the Lower and Middle School Director or Head of School

  • Support the School and its mission, maintaining a high degree of professionalism at all times

  • Bachelor’s degree required;, a desire to pursue a career in education, and strong preference for individuals in credentialing and/or advanced degree programs in education.
  • Knowledge of students with learning disabilities and ADHD is preferred.
