Sandy Spring Friends school seeks a Long-Term Substitute to join our Upper School Math team. This position begins in February 2019 and ends mid-June 2019. The primary responsibilities include the teaching of five mathematics classes following the basic course framework and expectations of the full-time teacher. The substitute will be a dedicated professional who understands the demands of teaching and is able to develop daily lessons that meet the goals of the classes and those of the full-time teacher. This would include developing assessments, completing grading, maintaining advisory group and leading advisory group meetings, as well as performing all basic administrative duties (ex. maintain attendance records, accurate grade book, comment writing).
Additionally, the substitute will be required, on a limited basis, to be on duty after regular school hours beyond the normal school day.
- Teach five sections of math classes - three sections of Advanced Algebra II (mostly 9th and 10th graders), one section of AP Statistics (12th graders), and one section of Algebra III (11th and 12th graders)
- Maintain accurate attendance records for classes and activities
- Serve as advisor for a group of 10th grade students and implement required advisory activities.
- Attend after-school faculty meetings (Wednesdays from 2:45 to 4:30) and occasional parent-teacher meetings (generally from 3:35 to 4:15).
- Participate fully in the school’s consensus-based decision-making process
- Model Quaker values of simplicity, honesty, service, tolerance, and nonviolence in all aspects of school life.
Qualifications Include: The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in the mathematics or a closely related field (advanced degree preferred). The candidate must have strong interpersonal communications skills and solid technology skills for use in instructional and professional tasks. Knowledge of Quaker history and education is desirable, but not required. Physical Requirements: The ability to navigate stairs as part of daily routines; mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement; bending and squatting as required to participate in activities; lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds; and the ability to maneuver as necessary within a regular classroom setting.
