Context and Philosophy:
Friends School of Baltimore has an opening for an 5th Grade Homeroom Teacher (interim).  Lower School Homeroom Teachers teach mathematics, social studies, reading, writing, and the other established grade-level curriculum.   Of particular interest are candidates who have experience using technology in their teaching, collaborating with colleagues, and who will incorporate multi-sensory teaching techniques and has an understanding of the developmental needs of our students. We seek candidates who bring innovation to the classroom, can engage students through varied teaching methodologies, and have regular and effective communication with parents. Candidates may be asked to share materials that demonstrate these qualities during the interview. Homeroom Teachers work at least 40 hours per week and are eligible for a comprehensive benefit package.   All full-time Lower School teachers participate in the full program of an independent school in addition to their classroom responsibilities.  This teaching position will begin in January 2019.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach the core subject area(s) in a creative manner that honors the Quaker values and the Teaching and Learning Paradigm of Friends School
  • Attend All-School Professional Days, team/department meetings, and Lower School faculty meetings
  • Help move the initiatives of the School forward by serving on committees and lending their expertise and voice
  • Write lesson plans in advance of absence
  • Collaborate with teachers in their team/department, within the division, and cross-divisionally
  • Ensuring the safety of their students at all times while in teacher’s care
  • Maintain a visually-attractive classroom and learning environment for the students, including maintaining bulletin boards in the classroom and hallways
  • Support in the development of students’ social skills
  • Provide parents and administrators with timely, written and oral reports that explain in detail how a child is progressing in the various areas of their educational experience
  • Student supervisory duties such as Lunch, Recess, Early Arrival and Dismissal – on a rotating basis
  • To maintain a current understanding of best practices in the subject areas taught and have an understanding of the developmental needs of the age group of students in their care

  •  Bachelor's degree required; experience preferred
