Job Description:

Horizons at GSFS is seeking a dedicated and effective Lead Elementary Teacher (grades may vary between K-3rd grade for Summer 2019) with teaching experience at the elementary level, background/interest/passion for teaching language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science in a self-contained classroom with a strong command of classroom management and culture building, as well as creating their own units and designing of curriculum.  We are looking for a talented, passionate, caring professionals who will work as a team player in this growing program, fulfill the Horizons mission, and create a joyous, inclusive, inspiring and educational culture. The Lead Teacher will work with a teaching assistant and a reading specialist, and will be supported by the Executive Director.

 

It is our hope that Horizons summer staff members will return to the program for more than one summer as we continue to work together, support our students, and foster long-lasting relationships with our families and their students. In the summer of 2019, Horizons at GSFS will serve up to 60 students, completing Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades from Wister Elementary School and area public schools in the community.

Essential Job Functions:

The Lead Teacher will :

  • Design and teach high quality, culturally competent, project-based curriculum and engage students in learning language arts, math, and science throughout our 6-week summer enrichment program.
  • Plan and lead fun, community-building games and enriching experiential learning opportunities, and accompany/engage with students in their swimming lessons and field trips.
  • Lead the Horizons staff in identifying individual students’ learning profiles, building on each youth's academic strengths and coordinating resources and activities to best address his/her areas of need.
  • Participate in daily meals with the students, attend weekly faculty check-ins during the summer, and other duties that may be required.
  • Attend teacher work days prior to the start of the program in order to learn about norms, programming, and prepare classrooms for the summer
  • Collaborate and mentor the assistant teacher(s) and work with staff to review assessment data and align curriculum across subject areas.
  • Develop and nurture a safe, respectful, challenging and fun learning environment.
  • Assist in evaluating program effectiveness (through surveys and feedback cycles)
  • Help maintain ongoing communication with parents, caregivers and school year teachers
  • Maintain open dialogue and communication with Executive Director as needed to accomplish goals and/or problem-solve
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, provide ongoing input into this job description as the position unfolds to keep this job description as accurate as possible.

In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon’s mission, this position requires a balance of knowledge of best practices and practical experience with and proficiency in the skills of instruction. The ideal candidate for the Lead Teacher position must be flexible, well organized, capable of taking initiative, and full of enthusiasm for both teaching and learning.

 

The Lead Teacher is a full-time position during the six weeks of the program with some preparatory dates ahead of the summer session and during the school year afterward.  The intention is to continue fostering and growing our relationships with our students and families as they return summer after summer to see you and all their Horizons family!

 

DATES FOR SUMMER 2019:

-Up to 2 May dates (TBD based on teaching team) for enrollment engagement and teacher meeting

-Thursday, June 20 - Friday, June 21 (2 days prior to start of program for teacher orientation and classroom set-up)

-Monday, June 24 - Friday, August 2 (6-week program with no program on Wednesday-Thursday, July 4-5)

-Work day: 7:45am-3:30pm

 

DURING 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR:

-There will be a 2-5 dates throughout the year that will be scheduled for family/student engagement events and some enrichment programming, as well (TBD)
