Job Description:

Horizons at GSFS is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant (K, 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade positions for Summer 2019) with experience at the elementary level, background/interest/passion for teaching language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science in a self-contained classroom with a strong desire to enrich student learning and create a special classroom culture with students, as well as a mindset of jumping in wherever is needed!  We are looking for a talented, passionate, caring people who will work as a team player in this growing program, fulfill the Horizons mission, and create a joyous, inclusive, inspiring and educational culture. The Teaching Assistant will work with a Lead Teacher, a reading specialist, and the Executive Director throughout each day of the program.

 

It is our hope that Horizons summer staff members will return to the program for more than one summer as we continue to work together, support our students, and foster long-lasting relationships with our families and their students. In the summer of 2019, Horizons at GSFS will serve up to 60 students, completing Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade from Wister Elementary School and the local public school community.

Essential Job Functions:

The Teaching Assistant will:

  • Both support and deliver:
    • High quality, culturally competent, project-based curriculum and engage students in learning language arts, math, and science throughout our 6-week summer enrichment program
    • Fun, community-building games and enriching experiential learning opportunities, and accompany/engage with students in their swimming lessons and field trips
    • Activities and plans that can address student areas of need and interest along with the Lead Teacher
    • The experience of daily meals with the students
  • Attend daily swim instruction lessons and provides encouragement to students (4 days per week)
  • Help to prepare snacks/meals as well as help with clean-up protocols
  • Attend to support and participate/model with students in special programming and activities (physical education, music, art, science, creative programming)
  • Attend weekly faculty check-ins during the summer, and other duties that may be required.
  • Attend teacher work days prior to the start of the program in order to learn about norms, programming, and prepare classrooms for the summer
  • Collaborate and work with the Lead Teacher’s vision and work with staff to review assessment data and align curriculum across subject areas
  • Develop and nurture a safe, respectful, challenging and fun learning environment.
  • Assist in evaluating program effectiveness (through surveys and feedback cycles)
  • Help maintain ongoing communication with parents, caregivers and school year teachers
  • Maintain open dialogue and communication with Lead Teacher and Executive Director as needed to accomplish goals and/or problem-solve
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, provide ongoing input into this job description as the position unfolds to keep this job description as accurate as possible.

In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon’s mission, this position requires a balance of knowledge of best practices and practical experience with and proficiency in the skills of instruction. The ideal candidate for the Teaching Assistant position must be flexible, well organized, capable of taking initiative, and full of enthusiasm for both teaching and learning.

 

The Teaching Assistant is a full-time position during the six weeks of the program with some preparatory dates ahead of the summer session and during the school year afterward.  The intention is to continue fostering and growing our relationships with our students and families as they return summer after summer to see you and all their Horizons family!

 

DATES FOR SUMMER 2019:

-Up to 2 May dates (TBD based on teaching team) for enrollment engagement and teacher meeting

-Thursday, June 20 - Friday, June 21 (2 days prior to start of program for teacher orientation and classroom set-up)

-Monday, June 24 - Friday, August 2 (6-week program with no program on Thursday-Friday, July 4-5)

-Work day: 7:45am-3:30pm

 

DURING 2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR:

-There will be a 2-5 dates throughout the year that will be scheduled for family/student engagement events and some enrichment programming, as well (TBD)
