Job Description:

10-month .5 Administrative position (+ .5 teaching)

Reports to Head of Upper School


To increase the number of adults in the Upper School community who deeply know our students as whole children and their experiences in the school, and to facilitate programming to address their needs, we have created a new position, The Dean of Student Life, to be responsible for building community among students by developing rich programming to meet student needs and stretch their capacities as citizens in advisory, student leadership, clubs, and retreats. The Dean of Student Life has oversight of all student life matters for approximately 280 students in grades 9-12. The Dean of Student Life will meet regularly with the Head of Upper School, the Assistant Head of Upper School, the School Counselor and the Director of Diversity and Inclusion to strategize around student needs and programming and will be integral to guidance team work and student concern meetings. The Dean of Student Life will perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School, in addition to teaching two courses. Qualified applicants should have three to five years of experience in the classroom (or the equivalent in another educational setting), as well as with student activities.   


promoting student leadership development (meet monthly with all student leaders; design and deliver leadership orientation workshop)

organizing and scheduling clubs, committees, assemblies and elections

convening and advising the US Student Agenda Committee

posting weekly the school and athletic schedules on email

encouraging a sense of joy and community in the division

coordinating and running all orientation programs: new students, 9th grade, student leaders, student buddy program and the 9th grade Powell House Retreat

working with the School Counselor and the Head of the Upper School on identifyinggrade issues or concerns and strategizing on how to address them

working with the Head of Middle School and the Director of Admissions on building atransition program for students entering the Upper School Advisor Program

providing training, guidance and support to Upper School advisors, assigning advisory groups, developing advisory curriculum and programming

leading case conferences regarding student concerns

securing thoughtful programming for all assemblies

attending all student retreats and events, including grade socials and evenings for parents, a sampling of sports events, performing arts and visual arts events

recruiting faculty advisors for student activities

serving on the Guidance Team and Admissions Committee
