10-month Administrative position

Reports to Head of Upper School

The Assistant Head of Upper School is responsible for building community among students by setting a tone of respect and promoting behavioral responsibility and personal integrity. The Assistant Head of Upper School has oversight of all discipline matters for approximately 280 students in grades 9-12. The Assistant Head of Upper School will meet regularly with the Head of Upper School, the School Counselor and the Director of Diversity and Inclusion to discuss student issues. The Assistant Head of Upper School will stand in for Head of Upper School in her/his absence and will perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School, in addition to teaching one course. Qualified applicants should have three to five years of experience in the classroom (or the equivalent in another educational setting), as well as leadership experience.

 

Responsibilities

Student Discipline and Conduct

investigates behavioral infractions and communicates with advisors and parents

convenes the Student Faculty Advisory Committee and the Academic Integrity Committee

familiarizes students, staff, and parents with the disciplinary procedures

maintains discipline records

reviews and updates guidelines outlined in the Upper School Student Handbook in conjunction with the Student Faculty Advisory Committee, the Upper School Faculty, and the Administration

 

Student Records and Guidance

compiles an annual discipline and attendance report and presents to faculty for review of practices and procedures, and as needed, proposes changes

hears and acts on attendance problems

establishes and maintains procedures for the transition of students entering and leaving the school

sits on guidance team with Dean of Student Life, School Counselor, Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Head of Upper School

meets with parents, school psychologist, and learning specialists to determine student needs in response to psycho-educational evaluations, medical leaves, and doctor notes

plans and supervises all emergency preparedness programs including fire and lock-down drills

 

Scheduling

manages Upper School student course registration, drop/add process, and review

 

Personnel

interviews, evaluates, and participates in the hiring process of new staff members

evaluates and supports faculty in the determination of goals to improve performance

coordinates and supports Upper School new teacher cohort in learning about school culture, advisory responsibilities, report writing

prepares weekly email communication for US faculty with US Division Head

 

Parents

assists in the communication between the school and the parent community

assists in the development and presentation of parent information and conference evening programs

attends Parent Association meetings with Upper School Head
