Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks a full-time classroom co-teacher for the 2019-20 school year. The Lower School program seeks to foster a love of learning and provide children with a firm grounding in the core academic subjects (reading, writing, social studies and math). It is built around rigorous intellectual exploration and joyful discovery. Students are challenged to think deeply about concepts and ideas, to make learning personal and relevant, to ask questions and to look for broader truths and understanding. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,” strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in best practices. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, and strong communication skills are essential characteristics of the candidate.
Additional responsibilities for all full-time teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress, providing opportunities for parent education, supporting admissions work, and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, duties, and school events. Our community is a collaborative environment, and lead teachers plan with their co-teacher (and other colleagues) to deliver an innovative, thoughtful program. Familiarity with reading and writing workshop, word study and Responsive Classroom is an asset.

Each applicant must submit a resume and a cover letter explaining how he or she would be a good match for these criteria, statement of educational philosophy, as well as three professional references via our on-line application.
