Germantown Friends School, a progressive Quaker school EC-12, seeks a Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to build on its tradition of excellence and leadership in diversity education. As a natural outgrowth of our mission, we are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a deep and meaningful way. The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion should inspire a bold vision for this work that encompasses all aspects of the School’s academic and operational processes.
The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will report directly to the Associate Head of School in this twelve-month position. The Director will collaborate with the Head of School, Associate Head of School, Director of Academic Program, Directors of Divisions, Admissions, Community Engagement, and College Guidance to provide consistent, comprehensive programming. The Director will focus on students, ensuring that support, opportunities for engagement, leadership programming and resources, are available and easily accessed by them and their families. The Director will ensure that our processes provide support to our students at all phases of their GFS experience. The Director will also ensure that the faculty and staff receive the support and leadership necessary to enacting our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Finally, the Director will work to develop and implement programming to enact the directives of various grants and endowments, particularly our EE Ford Grant, our celebrated Community Scholars Program, and the fund that supports student auxiliary expenses, the Rubenstone Fund.
- The Director collaborates with Admissions on recruiting students of diverse backgrounds, actively seeking out qualified candidates and supporting their application process.
- The Director designs a launching pad for new students in collaboration with colleagues in academic leadership and the Parents Association and Multicultural Parents Association.
- The Director acts as a resource to faculty and administration as they work with students of diverse backgrounds.
- S/he is consistently readily available to students, organizing and supporting affinity groups, and developing opportunities for engagement and leadership growth in the area of diversity.
- The Director ensures that programs, resources, and materials are easily accessed by students in the community.
- The Director seeks local and national opportunities for student engagement.
- The Director is available to provide support to families in the application process and designs events to welcome newly enrolled families in collaboration with the Parents Association and the Multicultural Parents Association.
- The Director creates programming that draws the school community together around questions of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, such as evening lectures/films, etc.
Faculty and Staff
- The Director works actively to recruit candidates of diverse backgrounds through hiring conferences, employment agencies, university placement offices, and in-house contacts.
- The Director provides support to faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds, collaborating with the Associate Head of School and the Director of Academic Program on mentorship and ongoing support programming.
- The Director supports faculty and staff growth by providing in-house opportunities for engagement on questions of diversity, equity, and inclusion and also by promoting professional development opportunities off campus that enhance cultural competency and fluency in diversity pedagogy.
- The Director is available for collaboration with faculty and department heads to support the development of curriculum and pedagogy that reflect our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering innovation and new directions.
- S/he fosters our belief that all members of our community are part of questions of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- The Director is a member of the faculty, teaching at least one class.
- The Director collaborates with Admissions to implement effective practices in student recruitment, testing, and application.
- The Director annually, and as appropriate, calls to attention best hiring practices and collaborates with academic leadership on implementation.
- As appropriate, the Director consults with the Head of School and the Associate Head of School and undertakes special projects at their request.
