Director of Financial Operations


Friends Select School is seeking a Director of Financial Operations to begin July 2019. The Director of Financial Operations is the chief financial officer who oversees the school’s annual budget and implementation of the Advance Friends Select strategic plan. The Director reports directly to the Head of School and will be an integral member of the administrative council and board committees for finance, financial aid, audit, and investments. The Director administers the financial aid program, and works closely with the Board of Trustees, serving as an administrative liaison for those board committees. The Director is also accountable for overseeing all financial and certain non-academic areas of Friends Select School, including the business office, health room, school store, food services, technology services, and outside rentals.


Friends Select School is a Pre-K-12 Quaker school in the heart of Philadelphia. Friends Select’s campus on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway utilizes the city as a dynamic living classroom, enhancing education through unparalleled access to local resources, including universities, science institutes, arts and cultural organizations, social service agencies, businesses, and government offices. Friends Select has three divisions—Lower, Middle, and Upper School. In addition to the Head of School, the administrative council consists of the Directors of those three divisions, the Assistant Directors of Lower and Middle Schools, and the Dean of Middle School, along with the Directors of Admission, Development, Facilities, College Planning, Technology, and the Director of Financial Operations. The Board of Trustees consists of 22 members.


Friends Select’s Financial Sustainability and Growth committee establishes systems and policies that ensure ongoing assessment of present revenues, expenses, efficiencies, and investments. This committee focuses on revenue generation, programmatic and facility enhancements, and diversifying adult and student populations. The school has a $19 million operating budget, around 150 employees, and an endowment of approximately $12 million.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted partner to the Head of School and trustees in achieving strategic goals for the school.
  • Advise the Head of School in all matters relating to finances, budget preparation, facilities planning, legal matters, human resources, and related policy formulation and interpretation.
  • Embrace the school’s commitment to Advance Friends Select, our strategic plan, and adopt a long-term perspective about the school; bring a sophisticated understanding of the financial levers and risks, and seek creative and innovative approaches to further the school’s strategic goals.
  • Provide comprehensive and transparent financial information to the administrative council and board members to inform priority setting, and help guide multi-year decision-making and long-term implications of capital investments.
  • Provide the Head of School and trustees with comprehensive analyses of competitive data, up-to-date compensation and benefits requirements, infrastructure utilization and planning (including specific deferred maintenance needs), facilities planning, and new construction. Provide oversight of project management and financial performance for major construction projects.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process to ensure thoughtful and coordinated budgeting with the administrative council and the finance committee.
  • Provide support to Facilities Management and the Information Technology department, as well as oversight and direction to the outsourced dining services provider.
  • Assure up-to-date and equitable policies and procedural plans for salaries, wages, benefits, and all conditions of employment for school employees. Identify and implement benefits enhancement as appropriate and feasible.
  • Address and resolve regulatory issues with the school’s legal counsel, external auditors, and IRS.
  • Effectively communicate financial information in a way that is useful for high-level, strategic decision-making.
  • Engage faculty and staff in discussions around the financial objectives and challenges of the school, conveying a strong appreciation of the school’s vision and the need to make informed decisions around competing priorities.
  • Enjoy working with diverse teams and take initiative to build and deepen partnerships with a broad range of constituents at the school.
  • Appropriately delegate projects to team members and with a clear set of agreed objectives.
  • Provide expert financial leadership and insight, and help safeguard the control environment and enhance the finance function.
  • Continue to identify and measure key business metrics and develop plans to address areas where goals are not being met.
  • Modernize systems, policies, and structures to support a world-class financial operation.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 10-15 years experience in a financial leadership role in an academic setting, with strong analytical skills and deep knowledge of management accounting and finance are required.
  • Experience in other areas including endowment management, facilities, information technology, legal and risk management, payroll, employee benefits, and human resources management, is desirable.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of four to six direct reports and their staff, including hiring, performance management and training, and professional development.
  • A strong business orientation with the ability to think strategically and “go beyond the numbers” in helping the Head of School and school community understand the financial implications of decisions, prepare annual budgets, manage annual audits, set short- and long-term priorities, and chart an informed, sustainable, ambitious future.
  • Strong technical and computing capability, including expertise with enterprise-wide financial systems.
  • Top academic credentials, including MBA/CPA or related graduate degree, are strongly preferred.
  • Understand and respect Quaker educational and community values and demonstrate experience working in or with an academic setting and/or non-profit organization.
