William Penn Charter School seeks a full-time Lower School Literacy Coordinator to begin in the 2019-2020 academic year. The Literacy Coordinator will partner with the Lower School Director, Assistant Director and classroom teachers to provide an engaging literacy program, including differentiated strategies to support a broad range of learners. In addition, they will guide teachers in using the Fountas and Pinnell assessment system to set instructional goals for students and also track data.
Applicants must possess an undergraduate degree in elementary education or a related field (an advanced degree is preferred) as well as reading specialist certification and a minimum of five years of experience. Prior experience with Columbia Teachers’ College Readers and Writers Workshop, Wilson, Fundations, and Words Their Way programs is preferred.
The successful candidate will embrace student-centered pedagogy, model curiosity and a desire for professional growth, demonstrate an interest in supporting the whole child around topics related to social-emotional learning and diversity, equity, and inclusion, and exhibit a willingness to work collaboratively with all constituent groups. Familiarity with the principles and practices of the Religious Society of Friends is highly desirable.
Responsibilities of the Lower School Literacy Coordinator include:
●Work in grade level classrooms teaching model lessons, working with student groups, and helping teachers implement the reading and writing curriculum.
●Work collaboratively with faculty on identifying reading/writing strengths and provide strategies, materials, and tools in support of student growth.
●Provide reading/writing related professional development.
●Monitor student progress and oversee reading/writing support plans for students.
●Collaborate with the Lower School learning specialist regarding student support recommendations.
●Communicate with parents around student concerns in reading/writing and recommend support plans as needed.
●Attend grade level child study and learning support team meetings
●Other duties as assigned by the Lower School Director and Assistant Head of School
