Friends School of Baltimore is currently seeking a full-time HVAC Technician.

Summary of Position:

This position will require the individual to be able to work independently or with other staff members in the department under the supervision of the Director of the Physical Plant.  This position will require the skills to assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The position requires some basic mechanical aptitude for operation and repair of equipment. The applicant must be able to operate, (load and unload equipment) using fork lifts, hand trucks while also being able to record purchase orders and received documents.

This employment opportunity is in a school environment and will be handling requests from staff, students and parents following the Friends School Philosophy.  Requests includes emergency events such as flooding, vandalism, snow and ice removal, outside of regular working hours.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Inspects work sites to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipes will not cause structural weakness. Selects the type and size of pipes and related materials and equipment according to specifications.
    • Assembles and installs variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings, including iron, steel, copper, and plastic.
    • Increases pressure in pipe system and observes connected pressure gauge to test system for leaks.
    • Connects pipes, using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints.
  • Lays out reference points for installation of structural and functional components.
  • Assemble and positions Heating, Ventilation Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration units in accordance with diagrams.
    • Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
    • Inspects inoperative heating, ventilation air conditioning, refrigeration unit to locate causes of trouble.
    • Cuts, bends, and crimps sheet metal to repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration equipment, and related components.
  • Pumps specified gas or fluid into system
  • Dismantles malfunctioning systems and test components, reassembles and starts unit to test operation.
  • Installs wiring to connect components to electric power source. Installs thermostatic control and damper in chimney. Installs air ducts, smoke pipes, blower, and fuel pipes.Installs insulation around pipes, air ducts, and refrigeration lines. Installs air and water filters.
  • Inspects and measures building to determine airflow requirements.
  • Plans and draws layout and dimensions of duct work.
  • Lifts or hoists and aligns components into position.
  • Constructs foundation of concrete or other noncombustible material.
  • Starts system, observes operation, reads gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure, and temperature in system.
  • Snow, Ice, fallen trees Removal – must be able to maintain the walkways, roads, steps and parking lot of any debris, snow, ice or trees that might have fallen.
Applicant Requirements:


  • Four-year college or technical school; or six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience of 6 years preferred.
  • Must have Journeymen’s License.
  • Must be CFC Universal Certified.
  • Must have a valid Maryland driver’s license and be able to operate a pick-up truck, van, tractor, and other motor vehicles on campus and in the Baltimore/Washington area.
  • Must possess understanding of control system drawings, electrical ladder diagrams, and HVAC systems and theory.

Abilities and Skills:

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and knowledge of all HVAC Systems.
  • Have a strong knowledge of low pressure steam and associated piping.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently is required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to perform duties in confined spaces
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Will be part of the security team for the school
  • May perform light maintenance duties, such as replacing of blinds, repairing desk furniture, and other apparatuses.
  • Perform and assist in construction, demolition, painting, plus any additional items to improve campus.
  • General clean ups of grounds and trash removal.
  • Replace floor and ceiling tiles as needed.
  • Prepares and sets up rooms for special meetings, parties, and other assorted activities.
  • Replace broken window glass and reglazing or boarding up area as a temporary solution.
