General Position Description

The Classroom Music and Performance Teacher guides students in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music and drama through a variety of planned experiences that include singing, moving to music, playing of instruments, improvisation, dramatic performances, and listening. The Classroom Music and Performance Teacher should use a variety of classroom techniques for learning and implement interdisciplinary work, outdoor experiences, educational technologies, and collaborative work with other teachers and classrooms into the classroom program where possible. The Classroom Music and Performance Teacher creates and administers a classroom program that is conducive to student learning and which emphasizes mutual respect for all people.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a creative, engaging and stimulating classroom program that teaches the fundamentals of music understanding/appreciation
  • Teach a variety of courses with a focus on the fundamentals of music, performance, and dramatic arts (Pre-K to grade 3), and on music, dramatic arts and public speaking (4th and 5th grade), as well as a series of performing arts electives for middle school
  • Teach after-school programs in music, performance, filmmaking, and the dramatic arts
  • Coordinate and direct school plays and musicals
  • Direct choral ensembles
  • Promote high expectations, demonstrate a caring attitude, and establish an environment that supports social, emotional, and academic development in students
  • Frequently communicate with parents and caregivers about children's progress by phone, email, face-to-face meetings, and reports  
  • Evaluate the progress of each student through formal and informal assessment
  • Managing student behavior expectations through positive and productive Responsive Classroom management techniques for improving student behavior
  • Integrate the Quaker testimonies of peace, simplicity, integrity, community and stewardship into the curriculum and during interactions with FFS community members
  • Other related duties as assigned




Applicant Requirements:

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • 3 years of teaching experience in related age groups and subjects
  • A comfort and excitement about working with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • A high level of interest in collaborating with team members
  • A positive attitude and a growth mindset
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to play piano; ability to play hand bells a plus

    Educational Requirements

    BA or BS in Music Education, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
