General Position Description:

The Assistant Principal partners with faculty and school leadership to cultivate and oversee the delivery of the school’s academic offerings, supervise student engagement and success, and facilitate communication with parents. S/he is a member of the senior leadership team and reports to the Head of School. The Assistant Principal is a champion for the school, its teachers, students, programs, and leadership and leads with initiative and passion for the school and its mission.

 Key Responsibilities

Curriculum

Work with the Head of School to develop and implement goals for teaching, instruction, and professional development and assesses the school’s progress towards meeting these goals

Support teachers in implementing the curriculum;

Arrange professional development and in-service opportunities for faculty

Faculty

Facilitate the hiring and selection process of substitute and auxiliary program teachers;

Oversee Auxiliary Programs;

Work with the Head of School to screen resumes, observe model lessons, interview, and select head teacher and specialist candidates;

Manage grade-to-grade transitions and assist with the high school admissions process;

Conduct teacher observations and evaluations as assigned by the Head of School;

Provide coaching for teachers in the area of curriculum delivery, instructional practices, and assessment;

Maintain direct communication with learning specialists and counselors;

Attend and/or clerk team meetings;

Support the report writing process

Students

Encourage a sense of joy and community;

Engage in positive conflict resolution and discipline as needed;

Assist teachers in creating and following through with positive behavior management plans;

Manage Otter Club and special student lunches;

Lead student concern meetings;

Manage student activities and coordinate student activities such as all-school outdoor expeditions, Quaker Week, the MS Retreat, 8th grade Final Meeting for Worship, and Field Day;

Make connections with students by participating in daily activities and assist with classroom projects as needed

Parents

Meet with parents to answer curricular questions, monitor and discern parental concern, and advise parents on how to get the assistance they are seeking;

Communicate behavior or academic concerns and work with parents to create plans for student growth;

Present and share information at parent meetings

The ability to work both with minimum supervision and collaboratively with a team;

Tact and discretion

Educational Requirements

Master’s degree in education

A minimum of 6 years teaching experience in a progressive, independent school;

A record of past leadership activities
