Job Description:

The Lower School seeks a dynamic and experienced counselor for Preschool through Grade 5 students. Our program stresses child-centered, inquiry-based, experiential learning. The Lower School Counselor is a member of the Student Resource Team, which includes the Head of Lower School and Learning Specialists. The Counselor supports parents by providing parenting information, referrals to local therapists and providers; education and guidance; addresses students’ needs through observations and pro-social guidance; and participates in the Lower School administration through regular meetings with classroom and co-curricular teachers, and division level meetings. The Counselor works with teachers to provide a learning environment that supports the social and emotional growth and development of students. The Lower School Counselor leads the development and implementation of the Life Skills curriculum, and serves as the primary resource for instruction in areas of consent, identity, conflict resolution, and the management of significant life events.

The successful candidate will be flexible, organized, creative and collaborative with a sound understanding of elementary education, conflict resolution, student and family support. SSFS seeks to nurture the whole child and the ideal candidate will have experience and embrace working with students who represent a broad range of abilities and learning styles. Commitment to a progressive, dynamic, and diverse school community is required.

Qualifications include: Masters in Counseling, Social Work or related field with focus on child development and with significant counseling experience (5-year minimum preferred). The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with developmental, social, emotional and cognitive needs of young children. Further qualifications include experience in a student-centered environment; the ability to form relationships with students, faculty and families; and the consistent demonstration of professionalism with and amongst all constituencies. Strong listening, oral and written communication skills are essential. Familiarity with  the Responsive Classroom approach would be advantageous and knowledge of Quaker history and education is desirable, but not required.
