Bryan Garman began his tenure as Head of School in 2015. He served as Head of School at Wilmington Friends from 2006 to 2015, after nine years at Sidwell Friends as a history teacher, department chair, director of the Summer Studies program, Upper School principal, and Assistant Head of School. Bryan received his Ph.D. in American studies from Emory University and is the author of A Race of Singers: Whitman's Working-Class Hero from Guthrie to Springsteen (University of North Carolina Press, 2000).

Bryan currently sits on the Board of Directors at the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington and the Friends Council on Education, where he is a member of the Task Force on Racial Justice. He has also served on the governing board of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), where he served as Secretary, sat on the Equity and Justice Committee, and co-chaired the Sub-Committee on Equity and Inclusion; and School Year Abroad, where he served as Vice Chair.

The recipient of the Williams College Olmstead Prize for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching, Bryan has worked as a University Mentor at the University of Pennsylvania’s graduate program in school leadership and has published in a number of professional journals, including Science, American Quarterly, The Canadian Review of American Studies, and Walt Whitman Quarterly Review. He has presented at a range of professional meetings, including the NAIS People of Color Conference, the NAIS Annual Conference, the Association of Boarding Schools, the American Literature Association, and the American Studies Association. A former Graduate Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, Bryan is a member of the founding editorial board of BOSS: A Biannual Online-Journal of Springsteen Studies at McGill University.
