Distance Learning in Lower School

Lower school educators gathered for Friends Council's Zoom "Share and Tell" about distance learning in Lower School  on Monday, May 11th. Co-clerked by Andrea Emmons, LS Director, Abington Friends School and Denise Coffin, K teacher at Sidwell Friends School, along with Kiri Harris, MS Dean, Greene Street Friends School and GSFS TAs - Tanesha Jones, Berna Can, and Lexa Grace, this gathering included breakout groups to explore the questions teachers are facing right now.

The "Share and Tell" sessions included ideas for how to sustain community, aspects of scheduling, how to relieve parents of too much time and responsibility, creation learning-stations, incorporating Quakerism into Zoom class time, and exploring testimonies through the creation of a testimony tree from found objects and more.

One teacher even riffed off a Flat Stanley by sending home a flat version of herself to students to use in their play, creative time, and even time together on Zoom.  All in all it was a generative time of sharing and dialogue with more to share and talk about than time allowed. The group plans to meet again this month and focus on the early grades K, 1, 2.
