SPARC Spring Retreat 2023

When SPARC participants reunited for their second retreat in April, they spent some time getting reacquainted with each other using an interactive protocol for “Creating Connections.” Each SPARCer talked with three others, sharing meaningful reflections about themselves.

 Query topics included:
1    What’s happening in the larger world that makes leading from a Quaker value-set so important? What Quaker principles seem most important to you in today’s world? What seems most present in your mind?
2    Where do you see Quakerism in your school? How do Quaker values “show up?” What are the unique characteristics of working in a Quaker organization?
3    What helps you learn best? What are the characteristics of an environment that brings out the best in you as a learner?

SPARC is modeled on the thinking of Quaker educator Parker Palmer, who wrote, “We teach who we are.” The inner life of the teacher is nourished in order to bring their best to the classroom. In an activity entitled “Facing our Gifts; Facing our Difficult Times” participants use postcard images, metaphor, and reflection to gain insight into strengths and challenges. In order to be able to “teach who we are” we need to be able to recognize our gifts. And, as we recognize our gifts and the gifts of others, we can gain perspective on more difficult challenges.

SPARCers were encouraged to share their personal gifts with the group and to take these ideas and approaches back to their colleagues to inspire personal growth at every level of school life. For example, one SPARCer, Keisha Hutchins Hirlinger, lower school music teacher at Abington Friends School, led the group in song.

In addition to reflection, using protocols, and group discussion, the retreat left time for relaxation, walks through the woods, and enjoyment of the wonderful food available at Pendle Hill Quaker Retreat Center.
The application process for the 2024-2026 cohort will open up in late Fall of 2023. Stay tuned!
